just a thought…

We don’t have a record of Jesus protesting slavery.

The Bible doesn’t tell a story of Jesus hurling insults at women as they entered a brothel to work.

It doesn’t appear Jesus ever put pressure on the government to mandate morality.

He loved people. He spent time with them. He accepted them. He forgave them. He gave His life for them.

Maybe it’s not as much about the issues as it is the people.

Maybe instead of screaming at women as they enter a clinic we should go out to eat with them.

Maybe we shouldn’t expect things of a political office that are the duties of the church.

We should love people. We should spend time with them. We should accept them. We should forgive them. We should give our lives for them.

We should be like Jesus.

different kinds of poverty

Extreme poverty seems to float to the top of the list when you think about the massive needs in our world today. What is most interesting to me is to realize you don’t have to go over seas to find cases of extreme poverty.

Right here in America there is a poverty so extreme it has left many in our country dreaming of a life they cannot have. The poverty is spiritual poverty. It is common across all walks of life. It even jumps the labels we put on people. There are people who affiliate with no religion that are struggling spiritual poverty - there are also those who call themselves Christians who are wrestling with spiritual poverty.

Spiritual poverty is deceiving because those living in the deepest poverty feel like they are rich.

Jesus talked a lot about having a rich spirit. In many ways, you could call spiritual fullness one of His life messages - a message He delivered to those in spiritual poverty. The irreligious. The religious elite. Spiritual poverty was just as rampant then as it is now.

The question for us today is two fold. First, are we following Jesus and allowing Him to lift us from our spiritual poverty and fill our spirit? And second, have we joined Him in fighting against spiritual poverty?

the one who showed mercy

three alcoholics

I had dinner a few nights ago with a group of people, and in the course of our conversation found out three of them were radically addicted to alcohol in their past. They told their story, about how their spouses paid the price. How their kids paid the price. How they paid the price, but just didn’t care.

The alcohol was too good.

I also had dinner the other night with some core leaders in our church. People who volunteer their time above and beyond to bring the gospel to the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

It was the same dinner.

There were these people and they were dyeing. Their lives were falling apart. Their marriages were about to end. There was no more hope. Then they met Jesus.

Everything changed.

The alcohol stopped. The relationships were healed. They were baptized. Now they’re leading the church.

How beautiful is redemption? How great is it when it echoes through our lives? I was in awe as I listened to the stories of these amazing Christians. They know what it means to be redeemed because everything in their lives has change. Nothing is the same.

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 4:22-24
